Message from the Headteacher - November 2012

Dear Parents Children and the Community,

In my three and a half years of serving you all, this is the hardest letter that I have had to compose.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you that I will be leaving my post as Headteacher at Brighstone Primary School at the end of the Spring Term (Easter) 2013.

I have asked me to open a brand new church aided primary school (currently under construction), to be called ‘Pilgrims’ Cross’ in Andover, and I have accepted. Although the school will open in September 2013, I will be required to start work from Easter in order to ensure that all is in place for the first children to enter the school in the September. I will also be leaving the island and moving to the Hampshire/Wiltshire area.

I have enjoyed every single day of being your Headteacher and treasure the relationships that I have made with you all. I will take numerous fond memories of Brighstone with me and just hope that I can capture some of the special ‘Brighstone essence’ to take to the children of Andover.

The Governing Body are aware of my departure and the Chair has already started work on initiating the recruitment process to find my replacement, who will continue to drive the school forward. The Governors will keep you updated as to how the recruitment process is progressing over the next few months but please rest assured that they will leave no stone unturned in finding the right person to become your next Headteacher.

I will remain absolutely devoted and steadfast to my role at Brighstone until the day I leave, when I will take with me the hope that during such a period of significant change for island education, I have made some positive differences to our wonderful, unique, community. The next Headteacher of Brighstone School will be a very lucky person indeed.

Miss Johnston

Home to School Bus transport 2011/2012

A letter from our Transport Officer...

It is intended that the Home to School Transport Bus service arrangement that is currently in place for Brighstone Primary School will remain the same for the next academic year commencing September 2011. Parents/Guardians of students travelling by taxi will be notified of the taxi arrangements in August in advance of the new academic year.

For the latest Home to School Transport information, Parents/Guardians of students currently attending or starting at Brighstone Primary School are advised to visit the Council School Transport webpage: www.iwight.com/schooltransport . The web page will be updated with the entire Home to School Bus service arrangements for the new academic year at the beginning August. For further information please contact the School Transport Team via email: transport.info@iow.gov.uk or by phone 01983 823780.

On the first morning of the new academic year, only those students who are eligible for free Home to School transport will be permitted to travel on the school bus without a Scholars Term Ticket. Term tickets will need to be collected from the Reception/Student Services prior to the journey home that day. Brighstone Primary School will be issued with Term Tickets, timetables and students lists for contracted Home to School Bus services just prior to the first day of the academic year.

Parents/Guardians of students who are not eligible to free Home to School Transport and would like to purchase a spare seat on a contracted Home to School bus should contact the Council call centre on 821000 or visit the Council School Transport webpage to complete an online application form for a Spare Seat Scholars Term Ticket. The School Transport Team will review all applications in mid August to ascertain if a spare seat can be allocated and those who have been allocated a spare seat will be contacted. The cost of a Spare Seat Scholars Term Ticket is calculated at a rate of one pound per day, payable for the full term or pro rata for the remaining days in a term in advance.

May I also take this opportunity to draw to the attention of Parents/Guardians and students the School Transport Code of Good Practice which outlines the various ways in which everyone who is in some way involved in school transport can help to make it as safe as possible. The Code of Good Practice can also be viewed and downloaded from the Council School Transport webpage.

Our Forest School Adventure! Part 5!

<b><i>Hello! We are 12 children from Years 3, 4 and 5.
Each Wednesday, we are heading into Brighstone Forest with our Headteacher Miss Johnston and helper Jan, to take part in Forest Schools. We are alo being helped by Kathy and Chris from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.
We are having a lot of fun and want to share it with you, so some of us will be writing a blog of things that we have done each week. We hope that you enjoy it!</i></b>

13th October 2010

First we put in our danger flags. We didn't have to put in our boundary folags today, because the adults had arrived earlier and done this for us whilst they were setting up. We collected up dry twigs for tinder and elderberry fluff for the fire. We then played a game. There were 20 sock snakes and 7 frogs and we had to try and collect them all. We also looked at our dens and ours had changed completely. James and Ben said that they had come up to the Forest at the weekend. We found a secret place for bracken and ferns. We toasted bread rolls over the open fire and were allowed to eat them in our dens. It was quite crowded but we just about managed it. We began to make a den book and then it was time to go. By Joshua

<i>Today we made our bread. We also had a game to play with 7 frogs and 20 sock snakes and carried on with our dens. We toasted our rolls on the open fire and then made our den books. This was my favourite part. We didn't think that Chris and Kathy were going to turn up today, but they did in the end. By Sam</i>

When we went to Forest Schools this week, we finished our dens and toasted our bread. I also made a secret weapon to stop other groups from entering our dens. By Joel

<i>We went into the forest and made our dens better. We also got to eat our strawberries on toast and it was very, very good. We had to find frogs and snakes as well. Next week we will have the best ever time at Forest Schools. By Jack</i>

Up in Brighstone Forest, Jack, Charlie and myself, made a camp and toasted a piece of bread. It was good and warming. In the beginning, we got changed into our clothes and got going. When we got to the forest we had to wait for a long time until Chris and Kathy could come down and open the gate. After that the mini-bus took us up to our camp. We lit the fire and that was a good feeling. We played a game called snakes. It was good fun doing our camp today. At the end, we said goodbye to Chris and Kathy. By James

<i>First we played a game of frogs and snakes. We had to find wooden frogs and sock snakes. I found three socks. Then I made my own fire. I picked my own things. Next, we worked on our dens. First I took off the bracken and then I put on new bracken. Finally I toasted some bread with my toasting fork. By Charile</i>

Today we used our toasting forks to toast our bread over the fire. I enjoyed doing some more work on my den. By Harry

<i>First we went to collect some thistledown for the fire. We also put leaves on our dens. We played a game of frogs and snakes. We used our toasting forks to make some toast which we cooked over the fire. By Jacob</i>

We went to get some fire wood first, becuase we didn't know where Chris and Kathy were. We played frog and snake hunt. We had to look for frogs and snakes but they were really stuffed socks and painted cardboard. We toasted some toast and then ate it. Kathy liked the look of mine the best. Chris saved us because he unlocked the gate. Marion didn't have the key and we were about to come back to school! By Thomas

<i>First we got some thistledown for the fire. We put lots of leaves on our dens today. Next we went on a frog and snake hunt. Then we made some toast over the fire. We went to get some more fire wood before we went back to school. I stunk of fire! By William,</i>

First we got changed into our waterproof trousers and tops and then we got on the mini-bus. However, when we got there, Chris and Kathy were already in the forest, but we thought they were not! Then Marion came up and we got into the forest. Next, we went to our dens. Kathy gave our group 2 glow sticks. This was the best part - with our toasting forks, we got to turn bread into toast and then played a cool game where you had to collect snakes and frogs. The snakes weren't real! Around our dens we found some sweet chestnuts. If you put them on your carpets, they keep the spiders away! Then we got back to school. By Joe

Today we first played a game when we had to find 20 snakes and 7 frogs that were hidden on the forest floor. Then we made our den book, where we described what we could see, hear and smell in our dens. Last of all, we toasted the bread over the open fire using our toasting forks. Then we ate the toast in our dens. By Ben.

4 National Teaching Award Nominations!!!!!!!

The children, parents and staff at Brighstone Primary are in a celebratory mood after being nominated for an incredible four National Teaching Awards.
The National Teaching Awards is now in its twelfth year and is an annual celebration of teaching and learning. It provides a unique opportunity for everyone to say a special ‘Thank You’ to the inspirational and dedicated people working in schools.
Mrs Susan Pugh, (Senior Teacher), received her nomination for the ‘Next Generation Learning Award’, with proposers citing the innovative use of technology to engage and inspire all learners. Whilst Early Years Leader, Miss Kirsti Capelin, was nominated in the ‘Teacher of the Year’ category, for her dedicated support and care to children and their families whilst in the Foundation Stage.
Headteacher Amanda Johnston, is about to complete her first year of Headship at Brighstone and was both surprised and overwhelmed to receive nominations for ‘Primary Headteacher of the Year’.
“It is an absolute pleasure to be the Headteacher of such a wonderful school and I am thrilled that the outstanding learning opportunities and care that the staff work so hard here to provide, has been recognised by the wider community in this way. We are most proud of our nominations for ‘Outstanding School Team of the Year’, as this category truly reflects how well the entire school community works together, including children, parents, staff, governors and members of the community. I am fortunate enough to have been given sight of the nominations and was amazed at the passion people openly shared for the staff at Brighstone School. With the successful expansion and the retention of our Year 4 pupils as Year 5’s in September, the school will have nearly doubled in size in little over a year. We are all excited about the opportunities that we will hope to provide for the families and community that we serve in the future.”
Unfortunately Brighstone’s nominations did not reach the grand final, however the nominee’s certificates of recognition, were presented by Mr Duncan Mills, Commissioner for Early Years and Primary Education, during the weekly ‘Golden Assembly’, to which parents and members of the community are always welcome.

We've been on Isle of Wight Radio!

Despite the soggy weather, I have had a wonderful day! Today myself, Mrs Norman and 3 members of the Eco Schools Council, visited Isle of Wight Radio. We recorded a 2 hour show during which the children chose the songs and dedicated them to classes and staff and also selected the subjects that they talked about. We had great fun and there was lots of giggling, ('Girl Power!') so I hope that the editing is good! It was Heather McCallum's birthday and we had a super guided tour from Hedley and Michael Coombes! The show should go out during the afternoon of the 25th April - further details to follow... More pictures available in the gallery.

School Council grill the leader of the Isle of Wight Council

Members of Brighstone Primary School's Eco-Schools Council were given the chance to put their questions to two senior councillors.

Leader David Pugh and Cllr Peter Bingham - who is responsible for Resources and is also the school's local ward member - answered a number of questions from the panel at a special meeting which was arranged after the pupils wrote to Cllr Pugh asking to come to County Hall.

There was a wide variety of questions to the councillors, including asking for tips on how to control noisy meetings and how many rooms are at County Hall, to how the council decides how to spend taxpayers money and what would happen in Brighstone when the school's reorganisation takes place.

The children, who were accompanied by headteacher Amanda Johnston, were also given a tour of County Hall and were shown the council chamber.

Following the visit, Amanda said ""The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit, particularly the opportunity to view the council chamber and use the gavel!

"It provided them with an understanding of how their decision making processes compliment those of the Isle of Wight Council in addition to the ways in which they can support my role of headteacher, in continuing to take the school forward.

"The children have invited Cllr Pugh to their January meeting, where I'm sure he will be grilled even further! The children at Brighstone are extremely reflective and are passionate about improving the school and local community and we are delighted that Cllrs Pugh and Bingham are supporting the children and school in this way."

Leader David Pugh said "It was very enjoyable meeting the children from the Eco-Schools Council from Brighstone Primary School.

"They had a wide range of questions and were very interested in the role the Isle of Wight Council plays on the Island and the job I and my colleagues do, as well as the way the council runs on a daily basis.

"I am sure they'll use many of the tips they picked up when holding their own Eco-Schools meetings in future and I look forward to visiting the school in January"

King Hal Visit - Tuesday 3rd Novemebr 2009

1st October 2009

Dear Parents/guardians,

Our topic in Lions and Tigers next half-term will be based around Tudor history.

As well as an exciting trip to the Mary Rose Dockyards in Portsmouth, we have arranged for King Hal (UK's number one Henry VIII look-a-like and re-enactor) to visit the school and having seen him and heard the feedback from the children at my previous school, he really has the knack of bringing the era to life. You can learn more about him on his website at http://goodkinghal.ebiz-design.co.uk/index.html .

He will be visiting the school on: Tuesday 3rd November 2009

The school will be subsidising his visit, so are asking parents for a contribution of &pound;3.00 towards the cost of this wonderfully interactive day. Alongside the cost for the Mary Rose, the total cost of the two events is &pound;16.00. Although an expensive amount, I can guarantee that both events will be memorable, and the children will gain a huge amount of learning from them. We are happy to take payments in instalments if parents wish.

Yours sincerely,

<b>Amanda Johnston</b>

Mary Rose Trip - 1st December 2009

1st October 2009

Dear Parents/guardians,

Our topic in Lions and Tigers next half-term will be based around Tudor history.

As I’m sure you are aware, there is a wealth of Tudor history at the ‘Historic Dockyards’ in Portsmouth. We would like to take the children to visit the Mary Rose, associated exhibits and to participate in workshops to learn more about the Tudor way of life. We feel that this will be an extremely valuable experience for all of the children, which will enhance and consolidate their learning.

This visit will be on: Tuesday 1st December 2009

We will be travelling to Ryde Esplanade by coach, leaving the school at 9:30am (please arrive at school at the usual time) and will return to school at approximately 5:15pm. We will need additional parental helpers for the trip, so please let your child’s class teacher know if you will be available as soon as possible, in order to complete the risk assessment for the visit.

The cost for this trip will be £13. We appreciate this can be an expensive time of year for parents, so please feel free to pay in instalments of any amount, until the final date of 27th November.

We would be grateful if you could complete and return the permission slip below by the 13th November The contribution of £13 (or instalments of any denomination) should be sent into school in an envelope marked “Lions and Tigers Mary Rose Trip”, along with your child’s name and the amount of payment being made before the 27th November.
Many thanks,

Amanda Johnston

School Reorganisation

5th October 2009

Dear Parents,

The Isle of Wight Council’s move towards a two-tier education system has taken a major step forward.
The authority has approved all the statutory notices that were widely advertised and set out how each Island school would fit in with the proposals.

The only change to the notices is that Chale Primary has been given a further two months to present viable proposals for a federation with another school or schools. If it fails to do so, then the school will close as per the notices.

The council has also agreed preferred bidders to run six new schools created under the re-organisation – five secondary schools based around the existing highs and the new East Cowes primary school.

The decisions were taken by the Full Council on Wednesday last week during a six-hour meeting and then ratified by cabinet last Thursday.

Further details can be found by visiting: http://www.iwight.com/council/committees/cabinet/1-10-09/minutes.pdf

For Brighstone Primary, this means that we will enlarge and extend to take children in Years 5 and 6. Therefore our current Year 4 children, will be the first to remain at Brighstone until the end of Year 6. As soon as myself and the Governing Body are in possession of any further details as to how this process of change will take place at Brighstone, we will of course inform you. There will be minimal disruption and both the academic and emotional needs of your children will be at the forefront of all decisions made by the school during this period of change.

Yours sincerely,

Amanda Johnston

Curriculum Evening for Parents - 4th November

29th September 2009
Curriculum Evening – Wednesday 4th November 6:15pm

Dear Parents,

I am delighted to be able to invite you to an interactive and informative evening for parents, exploring different aspects of the primary curriculum. This will be held at the school on Wednesday 4th November, in response to parental feedback gained via the questionnaires.
We will be offering each parent the choice of 6 workshops and you can select up to 3 to attend.
The programme for the evening will be as follows:
6:15-6:30pm – Welcome and introduction from the Headteacher
6:30-6:55pm – Workshop 1
7:00-7:25pm – Workshop 2
7:30-7:55pm – Workshop 3
8:00pm – Finish

List of workshops available:
A - Understanding how pupils are assessed at Brighstone Primary
B - The Early Years Curriculum for Reception pupils
C - Phonics and how we teach reading
D - How parents can support children in their learning at home
E - The 21st Century curriculum at Brighstone Primary (for Year 1 upwards)
F - Read, Write Inc (reading and writing intervention programme) for children who require additional support

We hope that these workshops will offer parents support and a taster of the learning that the children at Brighstone experience each day. You will notice that we have not offered any mathematics workshops. As this area is so broad, we feel that it requires a separate session, which we hope to hold early in the Spring term.

If you would like to attend 1, 2 or 3 of the available workshops, please complete the form below and return it to the school by the 12th October. Enter the code of the workshop that you would like to attend (e.g. A, B) alongside the time slot that would be most suitable. Dependent upon numbers received, we may kindly ask some parents to change the time of their workshop. We have enclosed 2 forms per child, should more than one parent wish to attend. I look forward to seeing you there!

Kind Regards,

Amanda Johnston
Headteacher

Welcome from the new headteacher!

3rd September 2009

Dear Parents,

I am writing to thank you for all for my warm welcome to your school. I am very proud to be the new headteacher of Brighstone Primary School and feel that I have the best job in the world, that of seeing children develop into wonderful young people who can make their way confidently, happily and successfully in the world.

At the beginning of this new school year, I would like to take the opportunity to recognise the achievements of Linda Cahill. She had a great vision for developing Brighstone from a small village school, to a popular, innovative school with a renowned reputation and many accolades. She is a motivational, energetic character who inspired her staff and pupils. The whole team at Brighstone Primary are committed to sustaining and developing the school ethos, culture and values that make us Brighstone Primary.

I believe that our children deserve the best and have the ability to go even further. We have an excellent group of staff and a fabulous environment which is evolving all the time. Brighstone Primary pupils have real thirst for learning and refuse to accept anything that is second best. We will continually strive for excellence and give all children the confidence to achieve their true potential.

When I first came to the school I found an amazing spirit where people really cared for each other and this mutual support is something that I am passionate about. Children cannot achieve amazing results without the support of the staff, their peers and you as parents. If we all work together I believe that everyone can achieve more than they ever dreamed. I look forward to working alongside you as parents and if there any problems that do arise, please come and tell us so that we can solve them together.

I expect children to work hard but also to enjoy their time with us. By the time they leave Brighstone, we wish for them to be enthusiastic, independent learners equipped to continue their learning journey. Your children are a real credit to the school and will continue, through pupil voice, to have a role in developing the school culture further.

With reorganisation upon us, this will be a challenging but exciting year and I look forward to sharing each step along the learning journey with you.

Best regards,

Amanda Johnston
