NEWS FROM MISS JOHNSTON
It has been a week of non-stop action at Brighstone. Starting with sport, my huge congratulations go to Mr McGouran and our cricket teams, who have performed amazingly well! The girls played St Francis A and B teams – winning 1 game and losing the other; the boys played Shalfleet and Hunnyhill and won both matches! An excellent achievement! Some of our super scientists have been participating in a month long challenge to independently purify water and to present their findings to a large audience – our team came 4th on the island, which is a great accomplishment. Our Year 6 class has been visited by all their Secondary Schools this week and I know that the children are now very much looking forward to ‘moving on’ to their next challenge! We’ve been out and about too! Travel has been high on the agenda, with Year 1 completing their road safety training, Year R visiting the local library and Year 4 working with Helen Stitchbury on the travel plan – I seem to see high-visability jackets wherever I go at the moment! On Wednesday, Year 4 had a super day at Quarr Abbey with Rev Helen, learning about the monk’s way of life as part of their current RE learning. Meanwhile, I had the great pleasure and privilege of taking two Year 6 pupils onto the Queen Elizabeth cruise liner! We were invited on board as part of the StemIT (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and IT) launch of a new skills passport. We enjoyed several talks about different maritime careers, learnt how cruise ships are designed and built, followed by an ‘all access’ tour of the ship. Next we were treated to a fantastic luncheon, before having the opportunity to meet the ship’s captain, Minister for Shipping, First Sea Lord, Queen Elizabeth’s Captain and Princess Anne! Her Royal Highness was on-board to launch the passport and we were fortunate enough to be provided with the opportunity to fly the flag for Brighstone in our own conversation with her! A super day that will live long in the memories of us all. Tomorrow, I look forward to working with members of the community of Chale on a rapid parish development plan to further support this area and we have mufti day on Monday and the Jubilee celebrations on Friday to look forward to next week! Could I put out a plea to ensure that your child comes to school with sun lotion applied, as well as a sun hat now the weather is warmer and to also make sure that your child’s jumper/cardigan is named – we are amassing quite a lot of lost property! Wishing you all a (sunny – fingers crossed!) weekend. Miss Johnston
