Travel Plan

Travel Plan Level (4 star)- Silver National Recognition

In 2006 a group of pupils from the Eco-Schools Council, parents, governors and staff developed a travel plan. Overall, this aims to reduce car use to the school by everyone who travels there including pupils, parents, pre-school, staff, governors and visitors. This plan is to help improve the environment and to increase activity. We have implemented the following:

Promote and Encourage Walking to School by Pupils, Parents and Staff

We do this by regularly holding promotional ‘Walk on Wednesday’ events, linking to the Schools Walk the Wight and going for whole school walks on our local Rights of Way network. Ask for a copy of our Wonderful Walking Wednesday Map. Parents also park away from the school and walk in, which helps to reduce congestion around New Road and Warnes Lane car park. We have looked at providing a Walking Bus but cannot get enough volunteers to run this.

Encourage Cycling Activities

Mrs Pugh has been fantastic at providing ‘Go Ride’ cycle skills training for all pupils with every child having the chance to learn to ride a bike during the school year. We have special weeks where the children are encouraged to ride to school by allowing them to ride in school. In addition to this, many staff, including Mrs Norman regularly cycle in to work on their bikes. We have family cycle rides, an after-schools cycling club, and take part in ‘Pedal for Parkinson’s’ most years. Our Year 4 pupils have also had the opportunity to go cycling in Parkhurst Forest as a PE activity. We have recently installed cycle and scooter racks for pupils, visitors and staff.

Improve Road Safety Around the School

We ask parents who cannot park away, to park in Warnes Lane Car Park (free) and keep the bus lay by in New Road clear for the school bus and taxis. We work with the Parish Council, for instance to install the speed limit warning signs in Main Road.
